This is a kind of unusual book: an original premise that I found appealing. There is a wise turtle who helps the central character, Donald, tell the story of his family and his rite of passage. I found the sense of authenticity really appealing, with many characters I felt I recognised from my childhood (the British bit) and some I never want to know the likes of. The writings strong, and compelling in an understated, insidious way- the first-person narrative voice (which also feels remarkably authentically Galswegian, and intimate) is probably responsible. I hope Bryson writes and publishes more. Turtle by Gary Bryson
